More responses to the most frequent question I get asked: “Are #Uzbekistan's reforms for real?” Me: “Uzbekistan just harvested its first *quinoa* crop. That's as real as it gets.”

Visitors to #Uzbekistan: “Are the reforms for real?” My new response: “The Navoi Theatre’s Fall 2018 season just opened with Star Wars, the Gypsy Kings, Led Zep, GNR, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Michael Jackson, and the Lion King. Two days after @kfc opened. Please stop the doubting.” 🤗

A breathtakingly poignant memorial in Karakol to the #urkun of 1916. The details make it almost frighteningly easy to imagine the journey and it’s immense cost.

At the races, dutifully betting on a 🐴 with the same name as my m-i-l. Also competing: Shahrukhkhan. #WorldNomadGames

Don’t screw this up referee. No pressure, but you’re on Twitter. #WorldNomadGames2018
5. September 2018 18:03
Team scenic declares completion. The referee has been called to have a look. #WorldNomadGames2018

I’m going to need a nap after all this excitement. Middle-age viewings of felt carpet competitions should come with a medical warning. #WorldNomadGames2018
5. September 2018 17:47
Also, my team should win points for elegance. What a pretty watering can. Where’s the referee when you need her? #WorldNomadGames2018

Team scenic is pulling ahead as they start to pour hot water and begin rolling the carpet. This is riveting stuff. People beginning to get excited. The press camera is here. #WorldNomadGames2018
5. September 2018 17:06
And maybe this team for the most scenic locational choice for making a carpet.
5. September 2018 17:04
And a felt carpet making competition. My money is on this team for the fabulous colors and for being the only gender neutral team where men and women are helping make the mat. #WorldNomadGames2018

A MASSIVE chong rahmat to the most wonderful Kyrgyz police for reuniting me with my Uzbekistan accreditation card, which was lost in a jailoo (meadow) of about a few square km. Needle in a haystack, found in less than half a day. Big smiles all around. #WorldNomadGames2018

Talking about financial inclusion and global integration, I found out this morning that my @KiwibankNZ credit card account was *closed* without my knowledge. Even more fun: the 30 min (and counting) wait time on an overseas line to find out what happened. Thanks @KiwibankNZ!
17. August 2018 02:58
I figured the only way to understand #Uzbekistan’s financial system was to join it. With my patchy Uzbek and dollops of help from the wonderful team at #NBU, the Axmok Hindustani opened a deposit and an #uzcard account. The slick #Milly app is on my phone. And away we go!

#VandeMataram from Tashkent! Many thanks to @amb_tashkent who hosted a fantastic ceremony and cultural show this morning! Here’s to India’s 72nd, and to the great hospitality (and yummy treats). @MEAIndia @SushmaSwaraj

Sorry @marcus - apology not accepted. This is 2018: People travel. A lot. They may want to check their savings account sometimes when overseas. They shouldn't have to VPN (three times until a server that you haven't blocked works) to get there. So long and thanks for the 1.8%APY.

Day 4 of having an Indian set-top box. The hard sells to convince me that I need a 3D bedsheet with pandas hugging whales makes me want to rethink everything I've learned about economic models.

29. June 2018 23:24
Bottom: what #bigdata said Tashkent would be like in June. All day. Everyday. Top: what it was. Moral: pack your raincoat in your suitcase, not the container that gets here in time for the “rainy season”. But the Olliy Majlis sure looks fantastic!
29. June 2018 00:32
The differnce between a foreigner and a Tashkent local: the former stops to stare at the beautiful greenery. The latter invokes a secret Tashkent-spidey sense to avoid getting drenched by the sprinklers, and stops to stare at the wet foreigner in a suit.

Great to catch up with Ian Hill, 🇳🇿 ambassador to 🇺🇿 over traditional Uzbek breads and delicacies. The restaurant ran out of pilaf (the horror!) but we managed to get by. Missing home and @MFATgovtNZ just a little bit more today.

@FlyAirNZ what an awful awful way to finish my #airnz flying experience. Your NZ29 12 May flight service manager just decided to put revenue over family. It’s the most unkiwi thing that has happened to me in the 7 years I’ve flown with you.

Coffee snobs look away. But there’s nothing quite like a Dunkin experience to relive your childhood.
22. April 2018 18:11
A huge thank you to @flyairnz Andrea and Stuart for their help and for rebooking me. #AirNZ is one of the things I’ll miss most when we’re away from home for the next three years.

I wonder if there are any empirical papers estimating the productivity/welfare loss to society from people deciding to wait the extra ten seconds for their Secure ID / 2FA tokens to refresh.

@nytimes comes to the rescue with pop-anthropology reading recommendations. The Stuart Kirsch book is based on his PNG experiences and will be my first pick. But Romanian secret police files also sounds fab!

Task for the weekend: “de-cluttering”. Seems innocuous enough, but it can eventually lead you to take a “How big a hoarder am I?” test, and the answer might not make your day.

Visit from movers = trifecta moodkill: a) reality of move sets in -> panic!; b) you find out a 20ft container is too small (you thought you only had 2 duffel bags) -> mid-life crisis; c) they’re coming back in 2 weeks -> only 2 weeks to get over panic and mid-life crisis

Picnics are so last season. All the teddy bears are at the #NorfolkIsland Country Music Festival. Nothing like teddies gadding about to bluegrass.

Ethics in the era of Yelp: how do you leave a good review for a car rental company that’s awfully - exceptionally - nice, but where the brakes failed on a scary downhill?
